ATP to Davydenko: “You didn’t try hard enough.”

Nikolay Davydenko, the #4 tennis player in the world, was fined $2k by the ATP for not trying hard enough in his loss against Marin Cilic at the St. Petersburg Open. He wooped up on Cilic 6-1 in the first set, finishing up in only 27 minutes. Then he managed to lose the following sets 7-5 and 6-1, double-faulting 4 times in the 2nd and 6 times in the 3rd. That’s when the chair empire Jean-Philippe Dercq called “bullshit” and thought Davydenko was throwing the match.

For anyone else this would be a very ballsy accusation, but Davydenko is currently under investigation by the ATP for possibly fixing a match in August. In the match against 87th ranked Martin Vassallo Arguello, Davydenko withdrew in the 3rd set after breezing through the first 2 with ease. The online gambling site Betfair voided bets because of irregular betting patterns.

Davydenko had this to say, “I was simply shocked to hear him say that. This is just outrageous. How does he know what I was trying to do? I was so upset with the whole thing I started crying.”
